Rice Hack for Wet Phones: Does It Really Work?
Have you ever dropped your phone in water and panicked? You’re definitely not alone! One of the most popular tech hacks on the internet is the “rice trick”—but does it actually work, or is it just another viral myth?
The Viral Rice Life Hack
The idea is simple: If your phone gets wet, bury it in a bowl of uncooked rice and let it sit overnight. Supposedly, the rice will draw out the moisture and save your phone from water damage.
But does science back up this trick? We put the rice life hack to the test, and here’s what we found!
Our Experiment
-
Accidentally (on purpose) dropped a smartphone into water.
-
Quickly wiped off any visible moisture.
-
Placed the wet phone into a big bowl of uncooked rice and sealed it in a container.
-
Waited for 24 hours and checked the results.
What Happened?
Surprisingly, the rice did absorb some moisture, but it wasn’t a magic solution. In fact, tech experts (even Apple!) say that simply leaving your phone in a dry, well-ventilated place works just as well—or even better. Some even warn that rice dust can get stuck in your phone’s ports!
The Real Fix for a Wet Phone
-
Turn off your phone immediately.
-
Remove the case and SIM card.
-
Gently shake out as much water as possible.
-
Place the phone in front of a fan or in a dry, warm (not hot!) area.
-
Wait at least 24–48 hours before turning it back on.
The Bottom Line
Rice might help a little in a pinch, but it’s not a guaranteed fix. Next time, try the expert method above!
